I would think it is outrageous for a CEO to make $100,000 a year while asking poorer people to donate money for a cause, that a percentage will line his pockets. Don't you

  1. depends on the charity if they practice transparency of course u can. if not better luck next time.

  2. I agree completely with JCravens - great answer!

Why is it that CEOs of charities doing hard work and work that benefits so many are criticized for making a decent salary?  Why not target business CEOs that are making much more than 100k?  Especially when many of them are making mega profits on the backs of 241 million child labourers???

  3. The best thing to do is to write to the charity itself, but, on your envelope, put  ATTN: PRESIDENT  and it should be forwarded to the one in charge of the charity. I agree that they earn too much money if they have to ask people to donate and they don't.

  4. No, I don't think it's outrageous for a CEO of a nonprofit to make $100,000 a year. Not at all.

Nonprofits aren't amateur organizations where everybody is working just because they have some time and would like a warm fuzzy feeling -- nonprofit organizations need trained, experienced professionals who can take on HUGE amounts of responsibility, far more than a CEO of a for-profit organization would ever dream of. These CEOs don't get the benefits that CEOs of professional organizations get -- they don't get full healthcare coverage, they often don't have large departments of staff dedicated only to, say, IT or marketing and, therefore, have to wear many hats at the organization -- they will be meeting with donors one day and working on the front lines the next.

I don't want the most serious issues of our time, like homelessness, AIDS, environmental threats, cancer, etc., addressed only by people who have some time to spare and are willing to take a huge financial sacrifice to help with such; I want these issues also addressed by trained professionals who can provide the intense time and dedication needed, who will be able to afford to make their job their priority in their lives. And these people, just like anyone, should be able to provide for their own families and their own needs just like other people who have jobs, shouldn't they?

In short, for a lot of nonprofit CEO jobs, I consider $100,000 a BARGAIN. They bring in FAR more than that in terms of services, management and donations -- without them, a lot of these organizations would crumble.

If you want to learn about the finances of an organization, ask for the organization's latest annual report -- it may even be posted on the web site.
