Question:

Is it possible to find out the pedigree of a pure-bred dog without knowing anything about the dog's parentage?

The lady I got my dog from knew absolutely nothing about the dog's parentage because the puppies weren't hers in the first place. Someone had just put a bunch of puppies inside her fence and closed the gate, leaving them there. She didn't want to keep them, so she gave them away.

  1. I think they do purebred DNA testing at Petco or something like that.

  2. Unless you personally have seen the parents there is not way to tell. Even AKC, KC, UKC papers can easily be faked. You can have a DNA test done to see the breed (or if a possible mix), but you'll never know the bloodlines.

  3. If you have the AKC papers for the dog you can always call AKC and tell them to send information on the dog's Parents.

  4. If the dog is registered, you can take the registration name or number and obtain information thru the kennel club.. since they were abandonded in her yard, I doubt there's any registration on the pups.

otherwise..  there is no way to obtain the pedigree..  you'd have to know information about both parents.

DNA tests wont tell you anything about the pedigree or parentage.  The DNA tests most places offer are only to help figure out what breeds may be in your dog's background.. it wont tell you anything about the pedigree, nor will it guarantee your dog is a purebred.

DNA test from AKC is only for paternatity testing.  You'd have to at least have an idea of who the sire may be to even begin using this test.

  5. You can take pics of the dog and send them to the AKC

  6. You can go to your local vet, and they can send out the dog's DNA to a lab, and have it tested. This is a fairly new procedure, so the test doesn't have every AKC breed. But it has the most common ones. Also, look at the dog, do your research(find pictures, ask people/your Vet what kind they think it is.) This dog is probably just a mutt. Good Luck!

  7. Not unless you own a Crystal Ball...

Without Papers, you can't even say that what you have is a Purebred dog...It might look like a <Insert Breed>, but since the litter was dumped, there is absolutely no way of telling.

Just enjoy your puppy and know that you're giving it a great life compared to the morons that dumped it.
