Is it possible to float in wine?

I was told that wine has no buoyancy and if you fell into a vat of wine you would be unable to keep yourself afloat.

  1. If you have enough of it.. WHY NOT?!?!

Don't forget to take a sandwich with you though.

  2. Try you first.

If u could float then please call me.

We both will float in the pond of wine.

  3. Oh, I certainly hope so, isn't that what heaven will be like ?

But to be serious, the specific gravity of wine is still quite close to 1.0 (water) with dry white lower than 1.0 (and therefore easier to float in) whilst some red wines can approach 1.1. The human body varies according to various factors, and there are equations to determine the specific gravity based upon height and weight. However, an average SG for the human body would be 1.07, so strictly speaking, all attempts at saving oneself aside, it is possible that one might sink in some 'heavy' red wines but not necessarily all. However, if you are awake and not intent on an alternative form of alcoholic suicide, I am guessing that it would not be greatly more difficult to stay afloat in the heaviest wines than in water. After all, the average SG for the human body seems to suggest that we shouldn't be able to float in water either, and in truth, dead bodies do sink once the air is gone from the lungs. The air in the lungs adds the extra buoyancy we need to float. On the other hand, I don't know of any experiments to prove or disprove it either way! Let me know if you do hear of any :-)
