Question:

Is it possible to get a needle stick from removing the protecting butterfly needle casing?

by casing, i mean the plastic cylindrical tube that covers the actual needle in butterfly needles

1. is it possible to accidentally stick urself with the needle while trying to remove the plastic tubing?

2. what are the steps involved in removing the casing?

3. how long does removing it take?

  1. Yes you could stick yourself but if done right its very unlikely.  First take the wings and  hold them together above the needle with your left hand and at the base of the cover gently slide the case up and off it with your right hand.  It takes about 2 seconds to remove the case.  Good news if you stick yourself with a clean needle you will not get any diseases just a little blood of your own.  If you are performing phlebotomy you should be certified and experience with a preceptor.  Don't let any company push you into doing something you don't feel safe about.  Its best for you and your patient.
