Hi every, before i ask my question i would like to thank you for taking time out of your day to resolve my confusion =D but anyways, for the past 2 two years i have been pursuing a degree in business administration, but recently i have found that i have a deep passion for medicine ... soooo i was thinking instead of changing my degree to some sort of science, take all the pre med classes and finish my degree in business? would this be disadvantage? I know getting into med school is highly competitive and i don't want to be set behind the others.

Sincerely

-Jorge

  1. Most people who go to medical school major in biology, chemistry, or biochemistry.  However you can major in anything you want to and go to medical school.  Statistics show that your major has very little correlation with whether you get in or not:

Medical schools do require you to take a lot of prescribed courses in college.  They don't call these prescribed courses a "major" though.  Minimum college course requirements to get into most U.S. medical schools include one year of each:

    Biology

    General (inorganic) chemistry

    Organic chemistry

    Physics

Related lab work for each science course

In addition, many schools require English and math courses.

Many schools will have arcane special course requirements, so you must research the schools you are interested in to make sure you have the courses they want.

One thing I would not recommend majoring in is premed.  If you don't get in, it looks bad on your transcript when you go into something else.

  2. yes as long as you do well in all the classes you need for admission depending on the school.  (bio, o chem, chem, etc)

  3. As long as you do all the pre-med prerequisites you will be fine. (Make sure you talk with an advisor to make sure you take all the pre med requirements).  I know a lot of people pursuing med school and majoring in other general majors (like psychology).  You really can't go wrong with business, it is a very broad degree.

It actually may be to your advantage to take a non science major so that you are more well rounded, and also more savvy in business, which would make it easier to open and manage your own practice.  :)

  4. It may be a slight disadvantage, since it might imply a limited interest in science, but it won't disqualify you altogether.  You may need to give more of an explanation than usual of your career path in your applications.
