I am canadian and my fiance is american and we're trying to figure the best/quickest way to get me a US work permit. Her dad has a company so we were wondering if he could sponsor me to get in and once i get there I go apply for other jobs. Also what is the price for a sponsorship?

  1. If you enter the U.S. on an H1B visa, then you are tied to that employer who sponsored and petitioned you for said visa, unless you can find another company to take over the original petition.

The fees are high the majority of the fees, if not all are usually paid by the employer. The employer is looking at around $3,000 minimum.

If your fiance's dad wishes to sponsor you to work his law firm, then you must also possess the necessary academic qualifications to work there i.e. a J.D. (Juris Doctor), you must also pass the bar exam and take additional education a ABA approved law school.

If you think you can work there as a paralegal of some kind, you are kidding yourself. There are no shortage of U.S. citizens or permanent residents to fill this position.

Furthermore, a Bachelor's degree or equivalent and 3-5 years work experience in the field is required to be eligible for an H1B.

Want my advice? Get your finacee to file the I-129F for a K1. It saves the hassle and the H1B is a lottery anyway and it only comes around once a year.
