For example, for a table I might say, "four cylinderical wood pieces, x feet high, set in a rectagular arrangement, and a rectangular slab of glass set on top of these four cylinders". But this is easy, just rectangles and cylinders. How would I describe something more complicated, like the 3d shape of canoe? Is there a general way in which all different shapes can be described in words?

  1. nope, that's why we have drawings.

  2. You can absolutely fully define any 3D object using words....it may just take ALOT of words.

In your canoe example, you would verbally need to define all relevant characteristics; this, however, would be quite a task - but would most definitely be possible.  I imagine you would need to individually (mathematically) describe the arcs making up each side of each section through the canoe.

Such as: 'the section 12.1" from the tip of the bow is two arcs meeting at the bottom spine of the canoe each with a arc cord or 3.2"  and an opening at the top of 18".  Canoe is 12" high at this section.  Wall thickness is 1/4"

"The section 12.2" from the bow...."  -you get the point.

Quite a bit of work, but it can be done.

  3. CNC machines are programmed in G Code.  If you could design something that is produced in a CNC, you could accurately describe the object using G code.
