I have one more year left in achieving my undergrad in Finance, but last semester I became interested in Ar t History. I have taken a couple of classes but not enough to get a degree. Once I graduate with my finance degree can I go back and get a undergrad in Art History? What is the process? Will I have to take the core classes over?

  1. If you plan to go back to your current school, start asking them now what would be required. You might be better off doing a double major now instead of coming back later and being told you have to jump through more hoops (such as being classified as a freshman again). You might be able to do a double major more easily and in a shorter amount of time than returning later. Ask your academic advisor or the chair of the art history department. Each school has specific guidelines.

  2. You can ALWAYS go back to get another degree. The possibilites are pretty much endless with the number of degrees you can earn. It's just that most people don't have the time and/or money to pursue additional degrees.

Basically, all you need to do it apply to school again. Whether or not you'll need to re-take core classes depends on the school. Some schools will allow you to waive up to a certain number of credits, while others insist that you start from scratch.

If you're planning on attending the same school, just drop by the admissions office (or give them a call/email) and they'll probably be able to answer your questions then and there.

If you're looking at other schools, it's the same idea: get in contact with the admissions dept., and ask!

Also, many schools have the info. you're wondering about on their websites. With a bit of searching, you could probably find an answer online within 10-15 minutes.

  3. Yes you can go back for an undergrad in art history. You don't have to worry about the general courses like math, science, english, humanities, etc. Once you do them that's it. You don't have to do them again. Getting a 2nd bachelor's will take probably two years because it will consist mostly of art history courses.

See if you can double major but that could be too much especially if you are working. I suggest that you wait until your first bachelor's is done. Many colleges do allow a double major, some don't, it depends on your college policy, also talk to an advisor in the art history department.

They will give you a check sheet of everything that's required to complete a bachelor's degree in art history. Good luck. I also like art history and thought about getting my degree in that.
