hi,

just trying to learn about genetics and want to know if its possible to make sure you get a coloured foal to a solid mare using a paint stallion, i know that cremello and perlino's will produce colour, there is a lot of Homozygous Black etc talk but what does it mean?

what does the stallion have to have genetics wise to be sure it will produce coloured progeny?

  1. In order for you to get 100% spots from a paint stallion, he must be homozygous for the spotted gene you are seeking, whether it be the tobiano, tovero, or overo. Most likely, you won't ever see a homozygous overo stallion, because most homozygous overos are born lethal whites and die shortly after. Basically, for a stallion to produce nothing but colored offspring, it must be homozygous for the sought after gene.

  2. http://www.stallingspainthorses.com/homo...

    Info on hymozygous paints.....................

  3. in order to get color from a solid mare you need to breed to a homozygous paint (two copies of the color gene). any serious paint stud owner will know the status of their stud and if they can't tell you whether or not their stud is homozygous they're not reputable breeders in the first place. if you breed to a heterozygous(one color gene and one solid gene) stud you have a 50/50 chance of color from a solid mare

** pamela a homozygous paint can't throw anything BUT color... your answer doesn't make a lot of sense. a homozygous colored horse will always produce colored foals 100% of the time

  4. I would never guarantee a color. I used to breed horses, they would come different every time.

  5. with colors and gentics, it's a game of chance. you can never be 100% sure of color. there's too many variablies.

take for instants, i would say i'm 85% sure with a friesian stallion and mare i'd get the color black and most to all the breed requirements (if both parents have them).  but there's always the chance for gentic mutation, hidden gene, something happening in the womb, alot of things could affect/effect the out come of the baby's gentics.

i answered this question in general terms of gentics, not just colors that you were asking about, but the same theories/guesses apply.  anyway, i know of horses that are solid colors and came from two paints, they're still a paint due to the breeding, but they dont have the 2-3 different colors of a paint all over their body.

good luck, i'd suggest to read a book on gentics, then equine gentics, or ask around to local breeders/vets for more info on this topic.

  6. no matter what the breed of it, you can NEVER guarantee a certain color. You cant with humans, cats, dogs, or any animal for that matter. Generations ago there could have been a slight mix, which could show up now, so no there is no way. Sorry.

  7. Go to ColorCalculator.com and enter information about the mare and the stallion.  It will tell you the odds of getting a colored foal based on the genetics of the sire and dam.
