If so, what type of fish could fit in a tank that small, and about how much would the whole setup cost?

  1. It is possible, but like zoo tycoon said, it will be very difficult to maintain healthy conditions in a tank so small. As for inhabitants, you don't have many options at all.

  2. It is possible, but like the others have stated, highly, highly unrecommended for all but the most experienced reefers as there is zero room for error on a tank of this volume. Really not worth the effort for most aquarists honestly, since your limited on what livestock you could have there, and the daily upkeep wouldn't translate to as enjoyable experience (in my opinion).

  3. yes you can but it would be boring. just throw in some coral sand and shrimp. clown fish require 20 gals. i supose you could get crabs.

  4. It's possible, but it would be VERY hard to maintain water conditions in that small of a tank. 1 mistake and the whole tank could die.

No fish can fit in a tank that small, only a couple of hermit crabs and/or snails would suffice.

With Saltwater, it's always good to start off with the biggest tank you can afford.

I'd estimate the tank, filter, heater, and lighting would cost around $30 (bought in a starter kit) or $40+ (bought each item separately). Salt would be around $10; Food no more than $5; test kit around $20; live rock around $6-10/lb.; live sand in a 5 lb. bag around $10; and inverts anywhere from $1-100.

  5. yes...i have seen a 3 gallon tank at the local fish store.  you could put some polyps and some snails in the tank.  as for fish i would only put one or two in it (NOT A CLOWN!!!) .  I would recomend a neon clown goby.  on liveaquaria.com it says that they need 10 gallons, but it would be fine in a 5 gallon.  You could probably have the tank set up for $100, but i would recomend a bigger tank.  my first tank was a 29 gallon because that was all that i could afford.  i wish i would have saved my money so that i had a 55.  my 29 gets really boring because all of the cool fish need at least 55 to 75 gallons.  if you were doing a 55 gallon tank the start cost would be more like $500+ without live rock.  The onlything about a 5 gallon is that you can't really go away for a long time because the water quality will change so drasticaly.  go with the bigger tank.

  6. 2 small clown fish and a shrimp. that's it!
