Question:

Is it possible to have a built in dishwasher w/o a cabinet around it?

I'm planning on moving my fridge so that there is space next to the sink to install a dishwasher. I'm planning on redoing the counter tops later but at this point, just want to have an operational built in dishwasher (not a portable one). Is this possible or do I need to have it inside a cabinet to make it stable?

  1. Ordinarily the dishwasher is screwed to the underside of the countertop, at the front of the unit.  (There will be a couple of tabs where you would shoot the screws thru).  If you don't anchor it, you may find it tends to 'walk' when operating.  An enclosure will also help reduce the noise.

If I were doing this, I'd make a 'butcher block' top, and a couple of side panels.  Put a cross brace across the back, so you can s***w the 'cabinet' to the wall.  Hit the stud in the wall, and it will be anchored just fine.

If you don't have access to woodworking tools, you might check with your local high school/ VoTech and see if a student would be willing to make it for you.  You could always contact a cabinet shop, too.

Use a 'food safe' finish on the 'butcher block', and youre all set.  (Rockler.com carries a few of these finishes).

As someone has already mentioned, you'll need a hole thru the side panel to run the supply line and drain.

  2. Just add a wall next and add and attach  4" x 24.1/4 wide boards two on the top one at tho bottom back side. Add plywood on the top to support the new counter top. This one need anyway. Don't forget to cut holes for the pipes on the old cabinet. Install the unit and the pipes. To how to do it u will get it from the manufacture. If you buy cheap it will be loud. Expensive are not  that much. I hope it was understandable.

  3. Dishwashers made to be installed have no sides or top except the tub itself. They also require a countertop to secure to. The noise will be terrible without being installed in a cabinet. If not secured to a cabinet, it will "walk" all over.

  4. It will be just fine without the cabinet around it.  It might be a little more unattractive, but it will work sufficiently.
