  1. Absolutely not.  Oxidation is the loss of electrons.  They must go somewhere, they can't be annihilated.  Reduction is the gain of electrons.  They must come from somewhere.  The electrons lost by the element oxidized are the "same electrons" that are gained by by the element reduced.


  2. If there is an oxidation half-reaction ( one element loses electrons) one reduction half-reaction ( one element gains electrons ) must occur
