  1. No way. Ten miles is nothing, especially in the sky. That is no way near as far as you can see towards the horizon and so if there was a thunderstorm ten miles away you would hear it in seconds.

  2. Red Diamond is on the money.  Current research indicates that if you can hear thunder, you can be struck by lightening.

Lightening is an electrical charge and distance dosen't mean much to an electron when one polarity is in a cloud and a good solid opposite electron is many miles away.

They are going to slam together...its the law!

    The law of Physics.

  3. Possible but usually you hear them also in case you didn't know. Lightening can strike a person 20 miles away where there is nothing but sunny blue sky.

  4. DOUBT IT

  5. it depends on how big the storm is and when the closest lightning strike hits, u will probably hear thunder but that is ony if u are close to the storm. if u see lightning miles away and u dont hear lightning, that means u wont really hurt thunder

  6. depends on the storm size

  7. Its possible you might not hear it. It depends on where the closest lightning strike is. Lightning can strike an object up to ten miles away. Consider the thirty second rule. If you don't hear thunder less than thirty seconds after seeing lightning, you are safe. That leads me to say again, it depends on the distance between you and a lightning strike.

  8. If you're in a mountainous area, or an area with large buildings, it's possible that obstructions will block the thunder.

  9. It is unlikely that you would not hear at least some of the thunder, but in an area that is very loud it is possible that one would not hear it.

Another loop in this explanation is that thunderstorms generally advect (they move). If the storm is 10 miles away in a loud environment and moving away from you, I suppose it is possible to never coherently hear any of the thunder.

So, as always when dealing with weather, the answer depends on many factors.
