I have a broadband connection with a wireless router. It is possible to connect to the internet through wi-fi(if a laptop) and through an ethernet wire(if desktop), and the beauty is, the laptops and desktops can work on the internet at the same time sharing bandwidth without interfering.

My question is, is it possible to access the desktop files from the laptop through the wi-fi? i.e. Is it possible to connect to the desktop from the laptop forming a LAN connection through the router?

  1. Yes, you can use either wifi or ethernet to do this.

First, you'll need to make the folder you want accessible on the desktop a shared folder. To do this, right click on the folder, select properties, and go to the Sharing tab. Then check the box labeled "Share this folder on the network." It will automatically name the shared folder, and so then just hit OK.

Then on your laptop, go to "Network places" and look for the folder you just shared.

  2. If you've set up your router and computers in the way you describe, you already have a LAN set up.

All you need to do now is set up file sharing on both the desktop and the laptop, then they should be able to see each other's shared folders. It makes no difference whether it's wired or wireless.

  3. You have a Local Area Network (LAN).  Some devices are linked via wire; some wirelessly.

All can swap files back and forth regardless of whether they are wire or wireless

  4. yes its Quite possible and easy
