Example: Someone working in a store has an IP address (supposebly in IL) but the location is traced back to TX via a web page http://whatsmyipaddress.com . No proxy is detected and it even provides you the hostname, etc. (Maybe the persons just lieing to me saying they are in IL but they're really in TX.)

  1. My guess is that they're lying. That site you mentioned is reliable. Just in case, I'd check the IP Address in question with a few other IP Tracker sites. :-)

  2. I would trust what that site says long before what any human says.  Most of the time geocoding will give you the specific city they're in, at worst it will take you to that state's capitol by default.

But IL instead of TX is way too off.  The only way if this is possible is if their headquarters is in TX and they route their network to TX and all outgoing traffic goes through TX.

  3. search for the IP in question at arin.net.. it will tell you exactly where the IP is physicall located (this is the American Registry for Internet Numbers)
