Question:

Is it possible to have every human gene?

My sister and I were having an evolution vs. Creationism debate when we couldn't agree on a topic. I asked her, How can there be so many different kinds people if Adam and Eve were a single race of people?

She responded by saying that they may have had every human gene. I told her that that would be impossible but couldn't explain why.

Is it possible for two humans to have every human gene?

  1. All humans have every single gene unless they have a deletion mutation which can result in death or disease.

Each gene however has variations  most of these variations are caused by single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNP). These changes in genes can be freak changes or genetically passed down

These are responsible for differing eye colour or hair and skin colour and  just about all the differences  you can think about.

  2. While I'm no creationist, Steve is right - every human does have every human gene.

  3. Well, everyone essentially does have every gene.  We have different 'versions' though and different expression which makes everyone unique.  Races came about through selection of certain genes based on environment and immediate needs of populations over time.

  4. evolution is the side im on since some genes were CREATED due to the fact that organisms need to survive and they need those created genes

  5. Adam and Eve would have had up to four chromosomes for each chromosome number pass on to us.  So you could get some variation-  blond, black hair; a few eye colours.

I don't know if you could get the full variation we now have but scientists claim that mutations happen so alot of genes are from changed DNA.

responder following-  There is no guarantee that all the stars were created just 6000 years ago.  Some stars may have been, but I know there are some stars 4. _ light years away.  The bristlecone pine should be given detailed info on its dating if you think it proves anything

  6. No, it is impossible for two human beings to have every gene.

If that was correct, Adam would have been an anemic, club footed, midget with a defective palate.

Human chromosomes have a finite amount of space.  There are specific loci (or locations) where certain traits are located.  For each loci, there are different alleles (forms a specific gene) that can be present there.  There a many many different alleles for each specific trait, for example eye color, tumor suppression, and sickle cell anemia.  It is impossible for someone to have every single allele.  You would be quadrupling the size of their genetic code and Cain and Able wouldn't have been born.

Although, Christian "Scientists" argue that Adam and Eve were created with pure genes as was the Garden of Eden and it wasn't until they ate the forbidden fruit did they become unclean.  After that, normal mutations began and the slow march unto the genetic pool we have today began.

  7. Each person has two copies of every chromosome, so may contain up to two copies of every human gene, except those on the s*x chromosomes (women don't have any Y chromosome genes, and men only have one X chromosome).

They therefore might have up to two different versions ("alleles") of each gene. Between them, Adam & Eve might therefore have four alleles for every gene, except those on the Y chromosome (only 1 allele) and the X chromosome (3 alelles).

    However:

[1] there are more than four alleles of many genes.

[2] many alleles are detrimental - so Adam & Eve would be expected to havce displayed every single genetic disease possible (either expressing the disease, or being carriers of the trait). for example - the most common form of Dwarfism ("achondroplasia") is an autosomal dominant disease: was it Adam or Eve that was a dwarf?

[3] inbreeding is very bad for humans. Since Adam & Eve's children *must* have bred with each other, the rates of genetic disease would have been astronomical. Such inbred populations do not survive.

This is one of the many, many reasons why your sister is wrong.

For another reason you might find interesting: if she believes in a literal interpretation of the bible, she'll believe that the universe is only 6,000 years old. Ask her how she thinks light from stars farther away than 6,000 light years has reached us (our own galaxy is 100,000 light years across BTW).

There are individual trees (the bristlecone pine) in california that are 10,000 years old.

Where did all the fossils come from? How about the coal and oil? etc. etc.
