I've had very bad breath since I was a child and nobody ever knew why. Recently I've been looking online and noticed some pictures of Oral Thrush. I've always noticed that I've had this one spot on the inside of my cheek that's always white, and I have a white coated tongue with a thick coating on the back that will never scrape off, no matter how hard I try. I also have some small splotches on my tongue that a doctor diagnosed as Geographic Tongue but now I'm thinking otherwise, since I saw a picture online that looks exactly like my tongue does.

Is it possible for me to have this condition for 12 years without it getting any worse than it already is? i mean, I've always had the spots on my tongue, the coating on the back and the splotch on the inside of my cheek. I've ALWAYS had the nasty breath. The breath seems to be getting worse as time goes by so I'm really starting to wonder.

Can you help?

  1. Well, there is more to having thrush then just whiteness. For one, it is painful, it hurts. You would have Raw and bleeding skin areas - when the white flakes are scraped or fall off. The white patches would not just be on your tongue but also on your cheeks and eventually your throat. You would be getting Inner lip rashes and Lip rash at corners of you mouth. Discomfort related to chewing and eating that would cause you to be unable to have food. The biggest indicator would be a low grade fever. Typically, you couldn't have thrush for this amount of time without getting the fever because thrush is a bacteria Infection, especially after it spread down into the throat.

When all else fails, take to your doctor. If nothing else, give the nurse a call. Only you can take action and advocate for your health. What they can do to test for the Thrush bacteria is do a laboratory analysis of mouth swab scrapings. You would have to allow your doctor to take a cotton swap and rub it on the whiteness in your mouth. They send it to the lab and check it for the Thrush bacteria. It's pretty simple and doesn't take too much time. Then you will know if this is the problem for sure.
