Question:

Is it possible to have two routers on one modem (specific reason)?

I have all my computers attached to the same network. As of right now, the computers are running just fine but the Xbox 360 has alot of issues connecting to the router. So i would like to (if possible) put a second router on the modem that could be used exclusively for the 360 (so i could tweak the settings just right and not worry about creating issues with the computers connection). Is there some way to do this? I currently have a WRT150N Linksys router in use, but the xbox cannot keep a stable connection, so I would like to use my older G series Linksys router (supported by microsoft and approved for xbox live) for just use with live. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks again!

  1. I had the same issue with Xbox Live.  If you cannot purchase  increased speed your fom your broadband provider, you would need to add a hub/switch.  The hub/switch would still need to plug into one of your existing router's LAN ports, so I don't think you are going to gain anything.  Your bottle-neck is the router/modem connection.  Your Xbox needs more bandwidth to maintain a stable connection.

The solution I found best was to buy a new D-Link router with 'Game Fuel' ( I bought the DGL-4300).  My Xbox is wireless, using the Xbox network adapter.  The D-Link knows when the Xbox is on-line and gives the Xbox priority.  The Xbox gets to use more bandwidth than the remaining devices on the network.  It works great.  The Xbox does not lag and we really do not see the reduced bandwidth on the remaining PCs that are on the network when the Xbox is on-line.

  2. Not easily.  The modem communicates with the router as if the router were a single computer with a single IP address -- the only one your ISP knows about.  The router then distributes messages from the ISP to the specific computers they're intended for with local IP addresses that usually start out 192.168.....

But you can't have two routers with the same IP address.

There is probably a more sophisticated way to connect one router to the other, but I can't advise you on that.

    Good luck.
