Question:

Is it possible to hide my pet rat from the landlord?

I've had pet rats before and I think they are the sweetest most adorable little creatures in the world.. My rats never smelled bad, because I always made sure their cage was kept clean and I didn't let them run around the house peeing on things lol

Me and my boyfriend and his friend just moved into a townhouse and the landlord said we couldn't have rats but we could have a fish or a bird. Birds tend to be alot louder than rats.. and if I keep the rats clean (which i would) I really wouldn't see the problem just sneaking them in.

They make me happy and I miss not having a pet. My boyfriend is paranoid we will get caught though.. so how can I convince him that we wont? aslong as we are careful about when inspection time comes around and keep the house smelling fresh I think we will be fine.. I would like a few more oppinions though..

  1. It's funny that your landlord would let you have a bird, but not rats! Birds are much louder and more messy than rats are (not that I don't like birds, I do.. just.. they're loud! And messy! ;P)

It's certainly possible that you won't get caught. How often does your landlord drop by, if ever? Although the thing is.. if you ARE caught, which is possible, what will you do with the rats? You need to have a plan in case that happens to provide a good home to the rats BEFORE you get them.

  2. YES!!  he won't knowtes a little rat!! just hide him if he comez over, maybe in your car or closet, but if they smell, then no.  i don't know if they smell because i have only had 3 hamsters and a rabbit.

  3. if u kno when he comes over than why dont you ship him to a family members house until he leaves.. and deff not in a car/he can die. or if u have good neighbors when he comes in one door you go out the other with the rat cage really quick and go to your neighbors and leave him there for a little while. oh and just so he doesnt get suspicious about u having bedding and food. put them in your clothes dresser or somthing.

if u have food and everything for a rat then he might think u have a rat. and spray your room down with somthing really quick when he comes becuz it might smell...

nd if u get cought (if hes nice) then i dont thnk he will kick yall out. just make up a sad story like somone was abusing him and not feeding him so i took him to give him a better home, and u couldnt find a home and you dont want to sell him to a petstore. and u got attatched to him....

just thnk of a good story like that (or go with that) but thnk of thigns he might say and wat u can say back so your not like ummm well this and so on and so on. (in other words so he doesnt find out your lieing)

    good luck

  4. I wouldn't do it. Where would the poor things go if you did get caught?

  5. I would. I love the cute little things. Just remember to hide them when the landlord comes over and that you could find yourself homeless if your landlord finds out. I would take the risk. Your boyfriend would have to let you if you already had them.

  6. why cant you have rats where you moved but you can have fish or a bird????

if you have a lease and read it

it mainly will say no cats or dogs but whatever lives in a cage is not considered a pet it is considered furniture

  7. Yes, as long as they don't do random inspections. I would sneak in rats too.

  8. I dont get why your landlord only lets you have only birds or fish. You can just let your rat stayed at a friend's house or something. You can visit them.

  9. why wouldn't your landlord let you keep rats? this is silly but yea if he/she comes over then just hide them somewhere, i would if i were you cause i love my pet rats and they brighten up my life with their cute/funny personalities :) i wouldn't let a landlord stop me from having them, just make sure they don't smell when inspection time comes :)

  10. You can try, and more than likey will get away with it.. but just remember you are risking evicition, loss of deposit trying.
