  1. Try this http://www.apachefriends.org/en/xampp.ht... it is a web server software. make sure you have port 80 opened on any routers or firewalls

  2. Yes, it's quite simple.  You just need a dedicated internet connection and a simple HTTP server software.  You will also need a static (non changing) IP address.  If you do not have a static IP address, you can use a free dynamic IP service such as www.no-ip.org.  This will give you a subdomain (ie. whatever.no-ip.org) and point it to your IP address even if it changes.  Once you have a static IP address or subdomain, you will need to set up the server and you can host a small website.  People can connect to your website by typing your IP address or subdomain in the address bar of their browser. If you have a firewall or router it gets a bit more complicated.

  3. Do you really intend to pass such an expensive and complicated process? You should know your site would be unavailable whenever your PC is turned off, and you're leaving yourself open to attacks. So I recommend get a reliable company to do that in return for a few dollars.

Take a look at: http://bluehost-service.atspace.com . I’m sure it would work for you and fulfill all your requirements. They have a really great offer & I have used them for over 3 yrs now, and have never had a single problem with them. Their service is really great and easy to use.

  4. Yes you can. However you won't have a domain name. Other people will have to type in the IP address to access your website. All you need is a server software such as apache tomcat. Or you can get a free domain and hosting at: http://www.l4rge.com/, http://www.x10hosting.com/, and a few other websites. You can also create a free wiki at: http://editthis.info/wiki/Main_Page.

  5. Yes You can host your website from your home PC if you have a 24x7 internet connection an always on pc and a static IP

the tutorial here is for windows XP pro SP2

  6. Yes it is possible. Running a web server is easy to setup.

Expansion to the site for business purposes are costly.

That is the downside, but if you just want something simple then yes have at it.

  7. Yes, you would need an operating system with server capabilities. Like Windows Server Edition, etc.

  8. Yes, it's not too difficult  You'll need a web server.

If you want stability and security, you'll want to run it under Linux.  It's also possible to run apache under windows.  http://www.apache.org is the "defacto standard" web server used on the internet.  Extremely powerful, not too hard to set up, stable, and free.

You will also have to register a domain name.  I'd suggest http://www.godaddy.com as they are both cheap and helpful

Advantages:  Experience, full control over what "Extensions" are installed and allowed on your web site.

DisAdvantages:  Lots more maintenance, keeping up with updates, your "pipe" probably isn't as fast as what you will get with a professional hosting package.  Computer has to be on 24/7.  No redundancy, if your computer crashes, your web site is down, you are responsible for backups etc.

  9. You need your own server
