Question:

Is it possible to just seal a power steering line instead of replacing?

I have a 2000 Honda Accord that is leaking power steering fluid. We have located the leak to be coming from the pressure hose line. I honestly do not have to money to replace. A friend told me it might be possible to just seal the hose instead of replacing it. Is that at all true or do I need to replace the entire line or hose?

  1. yep-  you have to replace it.  maybe see if you can pick up a cheapy at a wrecker.  because they are made for a specific model of car things like that can be ridiculously expensive.

  2. No. Hydraulic lines have high pressure and cannot be sealed.

  3. You might try lucas product for Power steering sealer!  If hole small enough it might work! (lucas electrical systems stink),- but their sealer is pretty good)!  Most auto parts supply stores have it !

Also it depends on where it is and how hard it is to get to! You may be able to seal pinholes pretty effectively, - by cutting a piece of re-enforced hose (like from radiator hose or something), - place it over leak area, and clamp it on with "worm gear drive hose clamps". Ideally,- you will have one that wraps all the way around to within 1/16' of meeting -- when clamps put on it will bring together pretty close, you need at least 3 clamps very close together, and you can "stagger them" so they sit as close to touching on the "bands" as possible! A couple more about 1/2'  out on both sides (one on each side)wouldn't hurt!   You may be able to completely stop leak for a while, or even just slow it down a lot!  But as soon as you get money available,- I would replace it,- as it is not going to get any newer, - and if leaking it is close to failure stage elsewhere!

  4. given the amount of pressure in that line, no you can not just patch it. on mine a 90 civic, pressure range sits right around 1140 psi at a full load. duct tape is not going to hold that pressure back. replace the hose and relax.

  5. you can't seal a high pressure hose you will need to replace it.

  6. Where I live there is a local business called "Hose Man" that will make a new high pressure hose, using your old hose ends for far less than a replacement from the dealer or auto parts store. Find out if a hose fabricator is located near you. Most heavy equipment repair shops depend on custom hoses in order to get the equipment operating quickly.

  7. no, you can,t seal or wrap tape around the pressure hose, there is alot or pressure on that hose and it won,t hold. you have to replace the hose.

  8. YOUR ONLY HOPE OF SEALING IT WOULD BE IS IF IT IS LOOSE WHERE IT SCREWS IN AT THE ENDS . YOU CAN NOT SEAL A HOLE IN THE RUBBER SECTION OF IT . THE SOONER YOU REPLACE IT ------THE SOONER YOU QUIT WAISTING MONEY ON FLUID , AND IF YOU LET IT RUN OUT AND DRIVE TO LONG --YOU WILL RUIN THE POWER STEERING PUMP WHICH IS FAR MORE COST THAN THE LINE/HOSE .
