Hi,

Is it possible for me to knock a minute of my 1.5 mile run time of 10:30 minutes within 4-6 weeks?

I'm due for Army selection (British) in 4-6 weeks and would like to achieve a sub 9:30 minute run time.

What tips are there to help do this?

  1. you dont need that time to pass, the time you have now is more than enough

the British Army doesn't like show offs

  2. yes i suggest running on a threadmill and training your legs to improve your run

  3. dang..british people are slow

  4. honestly, no. 1 minute is a long time to knock off your best run. Many sprinters need weeks of training just to shed 1 second off their best time.

Not to offend you, but if you're going in the army, i would hope you can run 1 1/2 mile faster than that.

  5. Yes, you can do it. The faster you go the harder it is to get quicker - walking a mile in 20 minutes or 18 1/2 is about the same speed, running one in 5 1/2 minutes or 4 minutes is a huge jump in speed, for example.

So what to do. I think the other answer had it - hit the roads.

Run 4 times a week for about half hour at a time and use some of these sessions:

Just run for 30 minutes (3 to 4 miles). This improves your stamina, on the test you wont get tired after 10 minites or so.

Run for 30 mins, or jog mostly then between alternate sets of lamp posts sprint, then jog between the next 2. This gets your legs going faster. Rest for a minute or 2 if you need to

Jog to a hill then run up it,jog down and repeat. This builds leg muscles

Jog to your hill again and jog up it then run down - this builds fast legs (overspeed training)

Enter a 10k race for about 4 weeks time, chat to runners who are trying to do a 54 min run and run with them (10k = 6.22 miles, 54 mins is about 9 miles an hour) - you might be faster than you think on race day

Try cross training too - cycle and swim

Thats the running, now the other things -the week before the test sleep well every night and be well hydrated and on the morning of the trial have a good breakfast )(such as porrige, bacon sandwich....)

  6. Of course it is, when i was in i was running around 10 mins but after 1 week on my combat engineering course i was down to 8.45.

Just hit the road, get out there and train.
