I am intending to go to Canada (Quebec) to study French on a intensive program which lasts 3 months. Given that, is it possible to learn French, I mean, obviously I won't be fluent at it, but at least will I be able to understand and speak some of it?

I know that learning a language in a place where everyone else speaks that language you're learning, helps a lot, however, I am concerned about the short period of time (only 3 months). I can't drop college in order to study French for the whole semester, therefore, I'm stuck with a 3-months program or nothing.

By the way, I can choose between learn German in Germany or French in Canada, but since German is an extremely complex language and French is way easier, i rather study French than German. It's a good call, isn't it? Thank you.

PS: Please, if you have already studied abroad, tell me your experience on learning the local lang.

  1. The quickest most efficient way to learn a language is to force yourself into an environment where that language is most dominant. So ya, you could learn French in 3 months going to Quebec...and actually be quite fluent by the end.

  2. In my mind that would be a good idea, especially, going into it  with the understanding, you won't be an expert at the terminus.

I've often wondered about sleeping with the earphones!

  3. You can do it as long as you understand that you will speaking with a Quebecer accent .... thing hick, hilly billy, red neck.  You will have to high speed pick up the local accent when you get there.

from exp. you have to learn to think in the new lingo or you will never get it, or at least not well.  bon chance.
