Is it possible to listen in to an Air TrafficControl tower radio conversations to planes?

I want to learn more about planes so is this possible. Even if it is only to a small ATC it would be helpfull.

Yes just get yourself a air band radio or a scanner scan between 118.0mhz am up to 136.00mhz am.

I don't know from were you are but a Google for freq will help you to get the different air space freq

Head over to live www.liveatc.net. You can listen to most airports and approach controllers from major airports around the country.  The problem with the types of scanners radioshack sells is they don't receive too well on the aircraft frequencies. The sportys transceivers are expensive, and if you get caught s******g around and transmitting with one, you could end up paying some hefty fines.

Yes it is. To hear the tower or any Air Traffic Control facility, you must be close enough to that facility as the transmissions are VHF, relatively low power, and more or less line of sight. To listen, you need a scanner with a frequency range capable of receiving 112-136 MHz, AM. You will be able to hear planes for quite a distance off as the height of their antennas (being in the air flying) will allow their transmissions to travel, sometimes 100 miles or more.

Scanners are available from Sporty's pilot shop, Radio Shack, and I'm sure several other sources. Sporty's does sell two radios that are receivers only; a hand held and a desktop. I have two scanners from Radio Shack. Both work very well on aircraft frequencies.

Using an external antenna on your house or car will improve your reception greatly. With a handheld scanner, you will need to be within about 2-5 miles of the ATC facility. You will still be able to hear aircraft though from some distance.
