  1. well, what do you plan on doing? job opportunities up there aren't that common. and also, what tI'mes of the year do you plan on being there. The Scottish are tough, but im unsure as to how you would fair in the winter weather. not to mention, (to my knowledge) in winter, there really aren't any roads.. only "ice" roads.  also, for part of the year, there is daily sunlight, and for another part of the year, there is daily darkness.

its possible if you have everything planned, and enough money (or a job lined up) but i think it would be a huge difference from Scotland (depending on where you are from/going to specifically)

the best advice i have is to plan. plan, plan, plan.

  2. You'll need a work visa. The details are here:

    http://www.goingtocanada.gc.ca/CIC/displ...

You do NOT need a lawyer, all the material is on the site.

  3. To work in government jobs, you need to be legally entitled to work in Canada - as in already have your open work permit.  An open work permit takes quite a while to obtain.  Best bet would be to work for one of our industries crying out for labour (trucking is a huge one) and have them sponsor you, then after a while apply for your perm residency (open permit).

This all does, however, take longer than 6 months.

  4. You may find the answer here:

  5. I lived in YK for some time and the biggest obstacle for you will be finding a job.  The immigration shouldn't be that hard.  Depending on your qualifications, it may be easy enough to find work as Yellowknife is very much a government town (so gov't jobs) and there is also the hospital as a major employer, etc.

Go for it! It'll be different from home but so is everywhere.

ps. Yellowknife doesn't have ice roads - it is actually a smaller sized city with regular plumbing, roadworks, etc.

  6. Would you be thinking of becoming an "Ice Road Trucker"?

    If so,

As long as you have a valid driving licence for the class of vehicle in the territory, and you can get the job, you'll be OK.
