  1. You may could obtain a proper extended visa, has to be approved by both countries.

  2. Yes, you probably can.. But, You would probably need to get a Visa so when you're there, you would be there legally. On the bottom of my answer should be a website to help you get a visa to go to Vietnam when you still live in the United States. I hope all works out for you.. and if you get to go to Vietnam, you should go to Ho Chi Minh City! My family lives there and it has lots of fun, adventurous things to explore there and around the little towns right by Ho Chi Minh City!!  (By the way there's 2 websites the first website is a site that explains more about getting a visa. And the Secound Website is a tourism site just in case you are going to Vietnam to visit for like a week or two)

  3. Yes, you can reside in Vietnam on a tourist visa if you want. You simply renew it every 3 months. I believe that you may have to leave the country one day every year, but I am unsure of that. (I've never stayed longer than 3 months at a time).

You can also find a job and get a work visa which is good for one year.

You may also marry a Viet national and get a resident alien visa which is good forever.

The government makes it fairly easy to live in Vietnam as long as you are not a trouble maker.
