Question:

Is it possible to make a PC Line In socket into an output one (i.e. stereo or mono headphone out)?

I was just wondering hypothetically if this is possible, seeing as the sockets are the same, and they are controlled by device drivers.

  1. No, it is not possible. The sockets may be the same, but the line out i.e. headphone out actually has a small amplification circuit built in, hence the ability to listen to headphones and adjust the volume. The circuit is built in to the sound card or motherboard, so changing it would be impossible. Also, the line out has no amplification circuit, so even if the drivers were changed, any sound output would be inaudible.
