  1. In Venice, F. S. S Lucia.

There is also the Mestre station just before the causway.

Don't worry though the train can go no further.  The steps from the front of the station look onto the Grand Canal.

  2. Yes it is. The train that stops in Venice is the last one on the track the train can't go any farther. Plus it put you right on the island. I've done both I've driven to Venice and taken the train and I thing the train was eaiser then parking and then taking a boat to the island.

  3. Came back yesterday and please believe me! Venice deserves more than a day trip from rome. If I had known b4, I would have stayed 1 day less in Rome and a day more in Venice and dont forget FLorence too!

  4. You'll appreciate the extra day in Rome (and wish you had more time).  Save Venice for another trip to Italy.

  5. Hello,

It is possible but unadvisable.  It is 4.5 hours between Rome and Venice.  You should either do it as an overnight or wait until your next trip to Italy.  If you are in Italy 7 days or less I would say to stay in Rome the entire time.  If you are there longer, then a night or two in Venice would be nice.  You want to take the train to the Venice St. Lucia station.  It is the last stop on the line before the train turns around.

If you are looking for a nice day trip to make from Rome consider Florence (1.5 hours), Pompeii (2 hours), Ostia Antica (30 minutes) or Tivoli (30 minutes).  Any of these sites are easy to get to and will give you a wonderful day outside of Rome.

  6. Possible, yes, however, Venice deserves more then that.

At least, if you choose to do it, take the night train and get into Venice in the morning so you have a full day-it's about a five hour trip each way, so that's a lot of train travel for a day trip! Oh, and keep an eye on your bags. The night train is a thiefs paradise.

  7. It is possible, but the earliest Eurostar doesn't arrive in Venice until 11:22. It's a 4 and a half to five hour trip. You wouldn't have much time in Venice. A better option is the night train. You can catch the night train at 10:50 pm at the Roma Tiburtina station, sleep through the night in a cuchette, and arrive in Venice at about 5:30 the next morning. A berth in a 4 bed compartment is 56.50 euro. To return to Rome you can either take a late Eurostar or another night train. This is really a better option when you're moving between the two cities since you can save the cost of a hotel for the night, but it is possible. It also maximizes your time in Venice.

I do day trips to Paris, Munich, Geneva, Rome, or Vienna from Verona using this approach and have never had a problem.

The trains stop in both Venezia Mestre and Venezia Santa Lucia. "You want the Santa Lucia station - Mestre is on the mainland.

2nd class on Eurostar from Rome to Venice is 51 euro. You cancheck schedules and costs on the treinitalia website: http://www.trenitalia.com/en/index.html
