any information about how to do this or reasons why it is impossible to make a call totally untraceable are both appreciated.

  1. Any call is traced someway or the other because its all send in digital format. The analog signals when converted into digital during transmission have no way of escaping from being traced

  2. by calling someone, you can be traced, while *67 will hide your CID info it will not hide your ANI (the service that 911 and many 800 and 900 numbers use to identify who is calling) anyone can dial *57 after a call is received to initiate a call trace.

using a softphone type of application may make it much more difficult to trace the call if the carrier does not pass along the proper ANI, however the carrier could most likely be identified from the sent ANI, and a subpoena of the carriers call records could be used to trace the IP address of the caller to the callers location.

here is a quick test you can do dial *67 to block your CID from being sent, then dial 1-866-my-ani-is ... most likely unless you are using skype your phone number will be read back to you...

for more info on call trace you can call 1-866-trace-4-u

payphones, and "disposable" pre-pay phones if you want to reduce your chances of being caught... just make sure not to use the same payphones over and over to cause the phone to come under surveillance.. and the pre-pay can be tracked wherever it is when it is on, so only turn it on to make calls, and only in "secure" locations... be aware of your surroundings, and where video surveillance is located..

  3. There is no way to guarantee that a call you make is 100% untraceable.  Dialing *67 before dialing a # does block your CID from showing up, but if law enforcement was to get involved there are other means to track down where the call originated.  There are many scenarios where a call in not able to traced unless there are traps/logs setup in advance.  The chances of a one time call using *67 being traced is fairly slim....but can be done.
