  1. There are many limitations in using Yahoo Groups for local recycling - including the two you mention.

There are alternatives to Freecycle that offer features such as these, including our site at http://free.LocalDataPlace.com

In our system, you can get an RSS feed for the items in any area and even on keywords in your area ("books in Boston", etc).  Also, "TAKEN" messages aren't sent to the entire group, so the number of messages is cut down dramatically.

You can see a list of other features on our home page.

  2. You can only set up RSS feed on a group that has public archives. Most Freecycle groups have their messages closed to the public, viewable only by members, therefore not available via RSS.  You could use your email filter to sort out any messages with OFFER in the subject line and send them to a separate mail folder for easy viewing. This would only be effective if the members in the group you belong to are good about using proper subject lines.

  3. it's against yahoo's terms to feed posts out of a group without the express permission of every single member... as a freecycle member, we're not allowed to do this ourselves, or allow members to (personal info, such as phone numbers, is sometimes posted, and we don't want it exposed to anyone) - members only is how it's set up

if you want to filter your posts, get a gmail account and filter offers and wants into different folders
