Question:

Is it possible to make ski poles about an inch or 2 higher?

I bought my ski poles last season (in a rush) and after about 2 runs noticed that they were about a couple inches too short for my liking.

Is there someway I can make them taller? Maybe take the top grip off - somehow - without ruining them?

  1. You might try removing the grips, and using a piece of the same material as the pole, if you can get it. Cut to the length you want and insert it with a wood dowel in the pole and the reinsert it in the grip.  When we shorten the poles, we have some scrap left over but I have never tried to lengthen them.  I adjust mine by 1.375 inches shorter, it is noticeable at upper levels of skiing.  If these are top of the line poles the modification is worth trying. If just a pair of off the shelf poles, buy another pair the length you need.

  2. hmm well Im pretty sure you could but the question is  will this  in anyway compromise the safe use of it.. like  will it snap while your going 30 miles a hour down a  sloop.... which then ends up killing you...  over lets say the cost of buying a new one :D

so if you want to save your self a  couple bucks  in exchange for safety  then you most likely end up gluing   a wood  crafted extension  , or wielding  aluminum depending on the  material...all of which will probably run you more money in the long run.. lol.. :D hope that helps

  3. Just borrow a longer pair from the ski rental shop. They'll never notice they are gone. Just return them at the end of the season.

  4. You can mak em shorter, the only way i know to make them longer is to "bend zee knees".  Next time, buy from a reputable ski shop

  5. I'm not sure how experienced a skier you are, but you might want to check with a shop or an instructor about the appropriate length of your poles.   You might have the appropriate length, but are using the pole inappropriately.  Using poles that are too long may result in imbalance on your skies...you might be sitting back more.  Shorter poles bring you more forward.  One of the drills we do to teach pole usage (and bumps) is to have the students hold their poles under the grips first.  This shortens the poles and gets the students more forward.

If the poles are really too short, I'm afraid you'll have to get a new pair.  There's no safe way to extend your poles without involving welding.  Check out the tent sales in late summer/fall, you might find a bargain there.
