In the US, it is only legal in Massachusetts and California. In Canada its legal, though I am not sure if it is everywhere. In other areas you can have commitment ceremonies, which is not legally binding.

Not really.  The institution of marriage dates back to the Book of Genesis, Chapters 2 and 3.  It is essentially the first institution and primary unit of society.   It stipulates a man and a woman.  

One of the purposes of marriage was to reproduce and fill the earth.

Natural function iterates the need of a man and a woman to reproduce.

Throughout history their have been people who have chosen the same s*x route, and they have relationships, even partnerships, and sometimes, even faithfulness.  What they do not have is the ability to reproduce (without the help of artificial, scientific, medical help).

Without our scientific ways of fertilization, if men married men and women, women, then there would within a hundred years or so be no more people on the earth.

There are states where it is possible to go through a legal marriage ceremony with a person of the same s*x.  In other words, it is possible to go through the form of marriage and to have the legal rights of married people.

So the question is, is this truly marriage.  I submit that the natural world and Bible agree that it is not.  It is a re-writing of the definition of marriage altogether.

In other words, same-s*x "marriage" is not the same as marriage viewed through either the lens of the Bible or of nature.  It is a distortion of these.  

I hope this helps your understanding.  The world we live in is confusing and we ourselves confuse ourselves often, because we want the world to be the way we want it and think we can make it so without harmful consequences to ourselves and others.  

I believe there is a lot more I could say, but let me say this, that I believe that the universe is intrinsically moral, and that when we violate that deep, abiding, living, acting morality we hurt ourselves and others.  We destroy the very things we want.  

I don't know if you read the Bible, but for the best definition of love that I know of read the Letter of Paul to the Romans, Chapter 13.

It's entirely possible to love a person of the same s*x without making it a sexual relationship.  It just depends on your definition of love.

You can get married anywhere.

Marriage is an exchange of vows, and a pledge to love each other forever. You don't need the state to sanction that!

If your talking a legally, I believe the only 2 states that issue marriage certificates to same s*x couples are Massachusetts and California.

Also, I think that such marriage licenses are only recognized by that state. Meaning even if don't live in those states, and go there to get married, your state won't recognize it as a legal marriage.

NY Governor Patterson says NY will recognize legal marriages in other countries and states.  Easy to find this info - just google "legal same s*x marriage" for info.

Also - someone in the answers said it wasn't legal "in a church".  Of course it is.  All Unitarian churches have always supported and performed same s*x marriage or blessed civil unions.  Many other churches also marry same s*x couples - including some Anglican/Episcopal,  United Church of Christ, American Ethical Union, Metropolitan Community Churches, for a start.  Check with your local g*y and L*****n community center for more advice.
