I've just always wondered, because my step son was almost arrested a few years ago because of a bench warrant that was out on him for a ticket that was never paid..thanks to his mom, blah, blah, blah. So can someone have no knowledge of a warrant, unpaid tickets, suspended license, etc.? and how would one find out or correct it? before finding out the hard way..lol.

  1. Well, calling the police department wouldn’t do any good as they won’t tell you over the phone if you have a warrant or not…the person has to be at the station to find out. If they do have a warrant, they’re taken into custody right there and then have an opportunity to post bond to be released.

Don’t be fooled into thinking that if you go into a police station in another city or county away from where the ticket was issued that they can’t take you into custody. Warrants vary in where they may be active. They can be good for the city only, county wide, statewide or nation wide. It depends on the nature and seriousness of the violation and whether or not they’d be willing to extradite that person from other jurisdictions back to them.

Unpaid tickets can most definitely result in license suspension and an arrest warrant. A trip down to the Dept of Motor Vehicles and the person (showing an ID) can find out if they’re suspended or not. If suspended, they can’t get re-instatement of their license until the ticket/fines, etc are taken care of.

I’d start with DMV first and then work my way over to the local PD to start clearing things up.

  2. yes it is possible

  3. uhh, i really find it impossible to not know of a warrant. i mean, im sure its possible to not know of the warrant itself...but if you dont pay a fine, failure to appear in court, etc...then youd have to know that you did something wrong, and the warrant is the result of this.

  4. Yes, it is.

  5. Theres no easy way, basically the reason the police run your information everytime you get pulled over or what not, is to check for warrants, so if you have a warrant, then they'll arrest you then and there. You can find out by stopping by at your local police station. if the warrant is from a different county they'll let you go most of the time as long as its not out standing.
