My friend is working on some homework and she is using my laptop but now she can't find her usb drive and the documents are still on the computer but cant be opened. Is there a loop hole to get around the fact that you can't open the files without the drive inserted?

  1. this is the problem with working directly from removable media. the files can't be opened because they aren't there, it's just the computer remembers the file names and where they are supposed to be (on a drive that you have removed). unless the file was also saved on your computer somewhere u will have to find the usb drive to actually access them.

  2. no you physically need access to the storage device that has the files you need.

just like you can't grab you keys out of your purse if you don't have your purse.
