The price of petrol keep on increasing from time to time. Jumbo jet consume tons of avgas ( fuel for aircraft). Is there any other alternate way to fly a plane without using gasoline?

  1. Jet planes don't use gasoline.  They have jet engines, and therefore they burn jet fuel, not avgas or any other type of gasoline. Jet fuel is a blend of kerosene and naptha; avgas is high octane gasoline used in piston aircraft engines.

In February, Virgin Atlantic flew an unmodified 747-400 from London to Amsterdam powered by coconut and walnut oil.  This was just a publicity stunt, but it goes to prove that it can be done.

All aircraft are very sensitive to weight. Therefore it is unlikely that an alternative energy source will ever be used in jet aircraft,a t least with today's technology. The new Boeing 787 promises to burn 20% less fuel per passenger mile than any other jet, but it will still depend on jet fuel, a derivative of good old oil.

  2. Nuclear energy can go a long way in providing energy, but I am not certain whether it is currently usable in jumbo jets.
