as in with like saying I want a basement with whatever kind of roof and a kitchen whatever wide, two stairs in different rooms and outer brick build, inner wood build?

If it is possible, sorry if it's a dumb question, college these days gets you too busy to think of anything else.

  1. Oh I'm sure it is. A few blocks down the road they put an entire house up in less than 2 days start to finish. The whole thing. It was pretty amazing they left it there for advertisement for a few months then one day it was just gone. So I definately would think you would be able to.

  2. An architect can help you develop what you envision into a workable, lovely finished product.  And energy efficient home design (see the following page)

can offset some or all of the architectural fee by building your home to save money year after year with every energy bill.

    Hope this helps!

  3. Yes, you would do that by hiring an architect and a builder.  They will work together, with your ideas and build you what you want.

  4. You can get anything you want in a house, as long as you can pay for it and it's technically possible to build it.

  5. Provided you own a plot with the relevant permissions, you can do as you please. Get designs run up, approved by the local planing authorities and a contractor to build the thing and you're away.

Some contractors provide design services (normally sub-let to a design firm) as part of a lump sum package and this might be a way to go. Alternatively there are "one stop shop" architectural/project management firms who will guide you through the design process, ensure all the statutory requirements are met and select & manage the contractor. Both routes have advantages; the first route is potentially cheaper but if you make numerous post-contract changes the contractor will rinse you and you might end up hiring a cost consultant to cover this (very expensive in itself). The latter route provides less likelihood of a cheap, fixed price but does guarrentee the cost is managed.

You can have input, but do get it designed proffessionally. I've seen several houses where the owners independantly designed their "dream home" the way they thought they wanted it. But without the training & experience of an architect these projects typically end up as unsaleable ponderosas with ungainly proportions and poor spacial flow. Don't be tempted to think you know better!

  6. You're gonna need alot of money to build a house however you want.

for someone with no construction, engineering or home building background, hire a 'Home Builder' first.

A Home Builder is an individual or a company that manages what happens when you want a house built.

Tell them what you want, they'll find the engineers, bring you blueprints, hire the contractors to do each job, and they'll be there every step of the way. Eventually, you'll have a house.

Do alot of asking around about a company before you hire them. They are government regulated so, see how long they've been around and how many building code violations have been reported against them. (Don't ask them DIRECTLY haha)

Don't forget to bring the cash though.. and every change you make along the way makes the house more spendy.

Either that, or find some handsome man to marry who's got a background in all different types of construction and home finishing and get him to hook you up.
