Is it possible to overdose on antihistamine, and how harmful is it?

  1. most over the counter drugs have a large safety net: the dose that gives you therapeutic effects will usually be much lower than the harmful dose. so you can normally take a dose higher than the recommended dose without any dangerous effects. having said that, you should always stick to the recommended dose because there's no way of knowing how much is too much until an adverse reaction has all ready happened. and drugs are tested strenuously before they're released, so the recommended dose is always the ideal dose.


  2. Taking Two tablets of, a antihistamine tablet, meant for adults is an overdose, but is not a poisonous dose.

    As a result the usual side effects are exaggerated.

    There are the antihistamines that cause drowsiness and that do not cause drowsiness. If an over dose of an antihistamine that causes drowsiness is taken you become excessively drowsy. eg. Piriton, Phenergan (British trade names}

    All the other side effects are common to both kinds of antihistamines ..

    The side effects are

    headache,dizziness,tremor (shivering like) , sleep disturbances,rashes etc.
