Question:

Is it possible to pour new concrete on top of old to level it out?

We have an exsisting concrete slab that was a floor to our shed that we recently tore down. The floor has a slop in the middle where at one point and time there was a drain. Could we add concrete in the center of the slab and level it out? We will be covering it with a wood deck next summer but we are looking for a temporary CHEAP fix for now.

  1. This very question was covered on the TV show  "This Old House"!  Temporary cheap fix it's okay, but serious problems down the road.

Problem with temporary cheap fixes...they come permanent, and somebody pays for them; next owner for sure.

  2. Nope.....bust up the floor and replace it completely....or wait until next year and place the shed over the existing concrete.......

  3. Any pour of concrete that is less than 3 inches has the potential to crack in a relatively short time.  You could pour on top of existing concrete, but be sure that no area is less than 3 inches and 4 inches minimum is actually preferred.  If all your looking for is a quick fix and the area will be covered with a deck next year, then almost anything can be done.  But remember that if you put concrete in the center to level the area, you'll have a problem feathering the edges because of the stones in the concrete.

  4. use a portland cement mix not concrete ...screed it off edge to edge and it will do fine until you put a deck over it next year...

  5. what just me said will be fine for a year,

  6. Cheap fix and temporary is what you can expect.

Actually it can be done, suggesting a min 3" coverage and a bonding agent.Don't forget to use wire mesh for re enforcement.Form and pour with a good 3/8th mix and things may work out for you.

Your slab will be covered by a new deck, hence the concrete would become an excellent weed barrier.

This is just some general thoughts

  7. that's about as cheap as you can get I guess. It will work. In other words, concrete will adhere to concrete, though istead of trying to level the one sunken area you have, it would be much easier to add another inch or two to the entire pad.
