i want to be a chemcial engineer, but i;m not that brilliant at maths (though i'm not bad, just average) and don't think i'll be able to do mathematics at a higher level for the Ib diploma and therefore doing it at a standard level. however i am taking physics and chemistry at a higher level. but is it still possible to pursue chemical engineering?

question mostly intended for people having experience with Ib but anyone is welcome to answer!

  1. Don't know what Ib is so can't answer that...

In any ChE curriculum you will have to take 4 semesters of calculus... if you have the opportunity to take pre-calc or calc in HS you ought to do it... this will make your first semester a little more bearable.

You don't need to be a math whiz, but you will have to work a little harder than your peers in an engineering curriculum. In any ChE program, you will be using calculus until you graduate.

Advanced chemistry and physics is helpful and may make the first year easier... but you will need the math.  Better to sacrifice one of the advanced courses and suck it up with a higher level math class.

I am a graduate ChE working in the chemical industry.

  2. We didn't have IB at my private high school but I took some AP clac.  You really don't need to be amazing at math as long as you are going to put more time into the courses in college.

  3. Yes, of course.

If you take SL maths, then you'll have 2 semesters of IB math (not including 9th and 10th grade). That's the equivalent of what any other student going into chemical engineering would have.
