Is it possible to put 15w40 oil in a gasoline engine?

Question

Typically, 15w40 oil is used in a diesel engine. Is it practical to put it into a gasoline engine, specifically a mini-van or smaller S.U.V. ?

The first thing you need to do is consult your owners manual, a lot recommend different weights oil depending on the temperature the vehicle is operated in, IE; lighter weights for cold climates and heavier weights for hot areas.

The problem you would encounter using too heavy a weight oil would be blowing seals on the engine where using too light of an oil would not provide the protection needed in the form of oil pressure. Either one will eventually destroy the engine.

In an emergency any oil is better than none though.

really if one needs oil any kind will work... better to use what is recommend you could use it but really any 30 w would be easier on the motor... we used chain saw bar oil in a car for a few years

it can be used in most motors.  many european companies recommend it for high temperature useage.  i'd only put it in a car if i either had... nothing else, or lived in the desert (SE cali, south arizona, new mexico or nevada) and had a car with a tendency to overheat.

we use it in all our F150 service trucks at our heavy equipment shop and havent had any trouble, but the owner is a bit on the cheap side as we use the same bulk oil we use in the tractors we service, good oil dont get me wrong just a whole lot cheaper in bulk
