Question:

Is it possible to put a diesel engine in a Mitsubishi Eclipse?

Simply put, I know a mechanic that converts cars to run on vegetable oil on the side. However, the engine must be a diesel and the car I want, an Eclipse is not made with a diesel engine. Also, if you have an idea of how much this would cost, let me know. I'm not really worried about cost because in the long run, I'm going to save money by not buying gas.

  1. ok your engine cat handel the compression unles you have it sleeved and reworked then you would have to go the process of the heater and seperatior and wow lon'ts of work

something that is a simplier option is a propane conversion

either way your going to have to rework the computer and you will still end up with a dog

you would be better off seling the eclipse and geting either a small diesel or small car

    goodluck

  2. Yeah it's possible. not sure on cost or benefits though. You could pull a diesel motor from a newer VW or something of that nature. can't think of really many other small cars that would have a diesel motor that you could transplant.

  3. Anything is possible... With enough money and know how? Practical, No.

But if we want to explore this let's look at it logically. Usually for an engine swap your better off sticking with the same brand.  Mitsubishi did build diesel pickups and also suppied engines for dodge and ford pickups. Is it about the same size as the current engine? No idea. It would be great if an engine could be found that could bolt right up to your transmission. I believe Mitsubishi may use the same trans bolt pattern on many of it's engines, but I doubt it would be that easy. Not sure if it could fit under your hood either. This would need more research,  but the point is, anything CAN be done. I don't think anyone would be happy with the lack of performance and it would cost more money than it saves.

  4. It can be done but it is very expensive. Running vegetable oil is not as cheap as people think. It will cost you around $2.50 a gallon to clean and convert to use able fuel plus your time to go around and find places that will give/sell you their used oil. If you are running SVO, that cost about $5 a gallon for clean oil.

  5. Anything can be done with with enough time and money.  Of course, you could buy a half dozen Mitsu Eclipse's with the money it would cost to convert one to diesel.  Said conversion will also destroy all the things that make an Eclipse fun to drive.  You'll probably have to drive about a half million miles to make up the cost of the conversion in fuel savings too.

  6. Just buy a VW with a diesel in it. Why would you buy a sports car and throw in a slow engine?
