  1. Whats wrong with the metal roof? Metal lasts longer and is lighter. I think you'd be going in the wrong direction.

  2. You have to consider that trailer homes are built to be light weight.  Shingles are very heavy about 80 + pounds per bundle. Your roof is not designed to take so much weight.  It could end up causing sagging of the roof or even bowing or racking of the walls.

  3. most trailers don't have enough pitch for shingle roofing. your best bet is to set poles and build over your home than you also get the added insulation or air pocket of having a attic type structure.

  4. structurally it is questionable the roof itself as stated by others is not designed to support the load. not that it might fail it most certainly will. Legally it may not be after the early seventy's the codes concerning mobile homes do not allow for structural changes from the engineered structure unless it is endorsed by a qualified engineer. The legal possibility was mentioned to support an "over roof" with posts that run to the ground. If you try to add the structure on the top plate of the wall it will likely also fail. They will not take the transfered weight. A terrific alternative accepted by many states is a "rubber roof" which adds less than 1 pound per square foot and is unaffected by heat, cold, shifting, etc, and although it is black it doesn't cause more heat to collect in the home. (I can easily defend this but not here) with 1 1/2" insulation applied under the membrane I have seen 30% energy savings!

  5. think u would have to cover the roof with OSB plywood so u have something to nail down the shingles
