Question:

Is it possible to put a snail in my guinea pig's dropper bottle so it can eat the algae?

I am so sick of scrubbing my guinea pigs' dropper bottle out all the time, especially because you can't remove the algae from inside or around the lid. I end up having to buy a new bottle.

I have a bazillion pond snails in my fish tank. Can I put one or two in the dropper bottle so they can help reduce the algae? If I do, how often should I blow bubbles into it (to aerate the water)?

Thanks.

  1. To avoid a dirty bottle, just change the water daily. It takes 2 seconds and your pig needs fresh water daily anyway. No algae will have the chance to grow.

  2. No don't put a snail in there as the snail will be cacking in the bottle all of the time whilst your poor piggy has to drink it. A good trick to keep algae down is to take the bottle out of direct sunlight and to pour some raw rice and a little wwater in the bottle and give it a good shake up to remove the algae from the sides.

  3. no snails are not good for tanks they say they clean but really they eat it and p**p it out and makes the tank HORRIBLE

  4. no but you can put a cloth around the bottle to reduce the amount of light that slows down the algae growing, the snails might also pollute the water due to snail waste if you know what I mean, you woulden't want too drink that.

  5. NOT A GOOD IDEA!!!! the guinea pig could get sick and what it easier? cleaning out algae or cleaning out dead snails? you can choose. hopefully you have common sense.

  6. i wouldent do that just incase. you could ask your vet about it tthough if you really want to or you could ask if theres a type of bottle that would be self-cleaning.

    GOOD LUCK

  7. don't. would you like a snail in ur cup? just keep your bottle out of sunlight and use bleach to wash it once a week. there are responsiblities of owning a pet and cleaning there water and food bowls are one of them. geta bottle scrubber the types you use for baby milk bottles. those should help alot. if your bottle grows algae switch to fresh drinking water for your guinea pig and change the location of the bottle. wash the bottle every day, and chaange the water every day.  and i would recomend you to get oasis vitamin c drops which are healthy and ever since i got that i never had anything wrong with my guinae pigs water bottles. good luck! :]

  8. get a bottle brush or your pinky finger inside to clean it. far cheaper than new bottles. have a spare and leave 1 to soak overnight in boiling water then swap them over the next day.

  9. I would not ever dream about putting a snail in a bottle my guinea pigs would drink out of! Keep the water bottle out of direct sunlight, that stimulates algae growth. Also, try a new type of bottle. If you're using plastic, try a glass one. If you're using glass, try plastic. I'm not sure which, but I know one of them is more prone to algal growth. Anyways, guinea pig bottles are supposed to be scrubbed to stay clean!

  10. anything is possible if you just believe

  11. Think it'd be easier to clean out algae then dead snails.  No it wouldn't be a good idea.  To remove algae from the inside - take  a long handled spoon, wrap a soft damp cloth around the handle, and wipe the inside of the bottle with it.  Then rinse the bottle well.
