Just wondering, I know you can save energy and save on light bills by producing and selling electricity, but can you "roll back the meter" enough to get paid?

  1. Yes it is possible, and does happen.  However, Electric companies in many states prevent this by requiring individuals to provide a one million dollar security deposit in case their grid tied system causes damage to the utility company's system.

I have heard that a few states do not allow the utility companies to act this way, thereby making it possible for people to do what you asked about.  They receive checks instead of bills.  California is a good state to do this in.

  2. In Washington about the best you can do is get a credit toward you existing bill and that is also limited to $2000.00 in one year.

  3. I suppose if you went on holiday for three months in the summer,

You would not have used any power, it would be all stored and feeding its way back to the grid.

  4. Yes. There are people that have various types of electric generating systems that they privately own and they sell electricity back to the power companies.

  5. yeah it's possible. i don't know the details but i'm pretty sure that if you put stuff back in the grid, then you get paid for it.
