  1. Both of these should be possible as long as you have your cables set properly between the systems. Standard cables are RCA plugs with red, white and yellow leads. Your systems should be colored coded as well. To record live TV onto VHS tape you take your cables from the OUTPUT on the back or front of your TV into the INPUT of your VHS tape deck. To record a DVD to a VHS tape you wil need 2 sets of cables. First you take one set of cables from the OUTPUT on the DVD player and plug it into the INPUT on the back of your TV. The TV will play that signal normally on Channel 3 on your TV. Make sure you see the signal on your TV screen before hooking up your VHS deck and trying to record. Once you have the signal take the other set of cables and connect them from the OUTPUT on the back or front of your TV and plug it into the INPUT on your VHS tape deck. Make sure you don't have any other cables connected into any of the systems or TV e.g. cable feed or direct TV feed. The reason you didn't have it working the first time is your components may not have been set to the right channels. Some components have a small switch on the back marked #3 or #4.
