There are no nuts on the steel rods that hold the rubber blocks on, if I sawed through them - and replaced them with a long bolt and a nut afterwards - could I repack these pedals?

  1. The short answer is 'no'. The pedals were never made to be rebuilt at all and the amount of effort in finding the cones to match would likely prove daunting.

On the bright side, those pedals should still be readily available new!

  2. Why not just replace them with other old pedals?

  3. why on earth would you want to?  the cap on the end should be a dust cap and beneath it should be a nut that will take the quill off the spindle.

  4. The metal cap should lever off, and then you will find a locking nut followed by a cone nut which is the bearing cone. take this out and lots of tiny rusty ball bearings will fall out, if they are still round enough to re-use, half of them will roll under the nearest immovable object.

So you will need grease, replacement ball bearings probably, and at least 20 minutes per pedal to strip, clean, and re-assemble. A better option would be to get replacement pedals on eBay, from £1.99 plus postage, but better still to spend £5 + to get a decent make such as VP.

Unfortunately we live in a throwaway society, where it is often more economical to buy new stuff than fix old stuff. Goods are increasingly made with "built in obsolescence" and retailers get more money from selling than from fixing, which calls for a less skilled workforce.
