2004 crf250r, switched to a heavy racing chain, chain got a little slack after a couple rides and ripped open the gearbox. its not on a removable cover, but the main gearbox body. iam not sure if a welder could patch it without causing damage to the internal gears, etc

  1. Your gearbox case will be made from cast aluminium (That's how us Aussies spell it leave me alone LOL).

Anyway the biggest problem for your poor welder is gunna be the dirt and oils impregnated in the alloy.

You need to clean it with thoroughly Iso-Propyl Alcohol (Wax and Grease remover) before he tries to weld it.

Generally a good TIG welder should be able to patch up your gearbox hole as long as its not too big.

    Good luck mate.

  2. Since most gear boxes are made from cast meatls welding is not an option. You could try to use JB Weld if the hole is not too large.Otherwise you may need to replace the whole thing.
