Question:

Is it possible to retrieve a deleted file from FTP?

I accidentally deleted a file from my ftp that, really, I need to get back. Obviously it's not on the server anymore, and not in my recycling bin. Is there any way to get it back? Or is it just completely gone?

  1. Its totally gone,  if its something essential call up your web-host and ask them to roll back  your account... if its free hosting... tough cookies.

  2. You were working across a network and that usually means gone for good.

Try file recovery software on the computer you were FTPing from - but asap and with the hard disk "slaved" to another one that has the recovery program on it.  Absolutely nothing should be done with the hard disk that the file was on, including a correct shut down of anything.  Best thing to do is pull the plug at the wall because the computer writes data to the hard drive as it shuts down and could overwrite where the file is.

When files are deleted, they aren't actually wiped off the disk.  Windows just removes the file name from its' list of files and where to find them.  Sooner or later, Windows will use that space where the file is to put a new file.  The sooner the disk is searched for a lost file, the better chance of finding it in a good state.
