Question:

Is it possible to run ethanol in an engine using a carburetor specifically modified for methanol?

Right now, it's easier to find methanol carburetors (at least in my limited experience) or carburetors modified for use with E85. I'm interested in converting an older vehicle to run ethanol exclusively, and I wonder if methanol carbs (or E85 carbs for that matter) can also be used for running 180 proof ethanol? If not, are there any companies out there that sell or modify carbs to run ethanol exclusively.

  1. You may have to re-jet it.  A general rule of thumb is to enlarge the main jets 30-40% over what is used for gasoline.  The problem with ethanol in a carbureted engine is it won't atomize well in cold weather.  The easiest solution is have a spare carb to run gasoline in the winter.

  2. I can't imagine why not. Ethanol and methanol are simply two different grades of alcohol. The main difference is that you can't DRINK methanol.

  3. You should be extremely careful with this. You could certainly get any gasoline engine to run on pure ethanol, but probably not 180 proof, which is 10% water. However, Ethanol is far more corrosive than gasolene and also will attach the rubber components if they are not designed to withstand alcohol. If you convert a car not designed for enthanol, it will very probably destroy the engine and could start a fire. Be careful.
