Is it possible to salvage old 8mm movie film?

I just pulled out my parents old 1940's vintage Ampro 8mm projector, oiled it, and was pleased to find it in great working order. Unfortunately, when I tried to show our old home movies of 1940-70 vintage, they were very dark. I think the film has deteriorated. Can it be lightened and put on DVD or some other new medium? Where would I go to have this done?

  1. Lots of different companies can help you.  Some better than others.  Search your local area for people that can convert the film, or look online.  Unfortunately, there is only so much than can be done with older film.  But the longer you wait, the worse the situation gets.  If you are serious about salvaging what you have, act sooner than later.

  2. Costco advertises this service. If I remember right they charge something like $20 per roll.
